Applications for the 2024 William C. Reeves New Investigator Award will be accepted through Monday, October 9, 2023. The William C. Reeves New Investigator Award, memorializing Dr. William C. Reeves, who was a renowned University of California entomologist, is sponsored by the Mosquito and Vector Control Association of California (MVCAC). The award is presented to the best scientific paper submitted and presented at the annual MVCAC conference. The Reeves New Investigator Award application differs from the MVCAC Call for Papers, if you have an additional speaking topic for the Call for Papers, please follow that application and guidelines.
Eligibility
The applicant must be enrolled in an accredited undergraduate or graduate degree program or have completed such a degree within the previous five calendar years (i.e., an applicant for the current Reeves Award must have received his/her degree no earlier than January 1, 2018). The applicant must submit a complete application packet, and must give a 15-minute presentation, followed by a 5-minute question and answer period, during the Reeves New Investigator Award Symposium at the MVCAC Annual Conference.
Judgment Criteria
The Reeves New Investigator Award Committee will evaluate each applicant on the quality of the study upon which the paper is based, the written manuscript, and the 15-minute presentation at the annual conference. Awards will be presented at the banquet. All Reeves candidates will receive a complimentary banquet ticket.
Application Procedure
Applicants must submit a complete application packet to rhickerson@amgroup.us by October 9, 2023, which includes:
- Completed MVCAC Reeves New Investigator Award form.
- Proof of enrollment/graduation. Proof of enrollment must be provided in the form of a letter from the student’s advisor department chair. If the applicant has graduated, then he/she must provide a copy of the diploma or other acceptable documentation to verify that he/she has completed a degree from an accredited institution within the last five calendar years.
- Manuscript for evaluation. The paper submitted for consideration must address the biology or control of vectors or vector- borne diseases. The applicant should be the senior author or his/her role in the study upon which the paper is based must be such that senior authorship is warranted. An applicant may submit either:
- A manuscript for publication in the MVCAC Proceedings; or
- A summary of his/her work for publication in the MVCAC Proceedings that is accompanied by a completed manuscript that has been submitted to or accepted by a peer-reviewed journal along with a letter from the advisor or journal editor confirming its receipt or acceptance. The summary should be longer than an abstract, describe the study and summarize the results, and may include figures, summary tables, or photographs. The summary must include a reference to the submitted/ accepted manuscript. The intent of this option is to avoid the “double-publication” of an article in the Proceedings and another journal.
The manuscript or summary must be formatted to meet the MVCAC Proceedings requirements. Manuscripts or summaries that do not meet the format requirements may not be considered.
